Our Story
Cook Insurance was founded in 1977 by Ron Cook right here in Apache Junction. Today, co-owner Steven Wade leads the agency from our office on Apache Trail – with a team carrying decades of hands-on Arizona insurance experience across every line they write.
We are not tied to any single insurance company. When clients call us, we compare multiple top-rated carriers on their behalf – and we keep doing that at every renewal. No single-company bias. No hidden incentives. Just honest advice from people who have been serving East Valley communities since before most of our clients were born.
We know Tempe. The Salt River corridor and Tempe Town Lake’s flood exposure during significant monsoon events – City of Tempe participates in the National Flood Insurance Program because FEMA has identified real flood zones within its boundaries. The large student and renter population around Arizona State University that often carries no renters insurance and is one unexpected loss away from a significant financial setback. The dense commercial environment along US-60 and the Loop 202. We have been writing policies for Tempe families and businesses for decades – from our Apache Junction office, a short drive east.

Why Tempe Insurance Is Different
Living in Tempe creates specific insurance challenges that generic online platforms and captive agents rarely understand. Here is what actually matters for Tempe residents.
Tempe's location along the Salt River creates documented flood risk during significant monsoon events. FEMA has designated Special Flood Hazard Areas within Tempe's boundaries along the Salt River corridor and near Tempe Town Lake. The City of Tempe participates in the National Flood Insurance Program specifically because of this risk. Properties in or near FEMA-designated flood zones whose owners carry a federally backed mortgage are required to purchase flood insurance. Standard homeowners policies do not cover flood damage from any source.
Tempe is home to Arizona State University, one of the largest public universities in the United States. A significant portion of Tempe's population rents rather than owns - and most renters have no coverage for their personal belongings, personal liability, or temporary housing costs if their rental becomes uninhabitable. Renters insurance in Tempe is available from as little as $94 per year according to SafeButler's 2026 carrier data. The gap between what a renter owns and what they could afford to replace out of pocket is often far larger than they realise.
Tempe sits at the intersection of US-60, Loop 101, and Loop 202 - some of the most heavily travelled roads in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Arizona's statewide uninsured driver rate of approximately 11.8% applies fully to Tempe's corridors. Uninsured motorist coverage is not required by Arizona law, which means many Tempe drivers are unknowingly exposed if an uninsured driver is at fault in an accident and cannot cover the resulting medical costs and vehicle damages.
Tempe's established neighborhoods near ASU and Mill Avenue include homes built in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s with original roofing, plumbing, and electrical systems that carry higher claim frequency. Older flat-roof construction is common downtown. With Arizona construction costs rising significantly, many Tempe homeowners are carrying dwelling limits set years ago that no longer reflect current rebuilding costs. We review your dwelling limit against actual replacement cost at every renewal.
Tempe's business environment - from ASU-adjacent restaurants and retailers to technology companies and professional services - faces risks that standard off-the-shelf policies may not address correctly. Business interruption coverage, cyber liability for technology firms, flood endorsements for businesses in FEMA flood zones near Tempe Town Lake, and commercial auto for businesses with vehicle-dependent operations are all coverage considerations specific to Tempe's business landscape.
Our Services
From personal auto and renters insurance to commercial coverage for Tempe businesses, Cook Insurance handles every type of coverage Tempe families and business owners need – all from A-Rated carriers, all shopped across multiple companies so you never overpay.
Tempe drivers navigate some of the Phoenix metro's most heavily travelled corridors - US-60, Loop 101, and Loop 202 - where Arizona's 11.8% uninsured driver rate creates real exposure. Arizona's minimum 25/50/15 liability rarely covers the real cost of a serious accident. We shop 14 A-Rated carriers to find the right coverage for your Tempe driving profile and budget.
Tempe businesses face risks specific to their environment - monsoon flooding near Tempe Town Lake, cyber liability for the technology and professional services firms clustered around ASU, commercial flood exposure for businesses in FEMA flood zones, and workers compensation for Arizona employers with even one employee. We build commercial packages tailored to your Tempe business's actual exposure.
Tempe homeowners face monsoon flooding risk in FEMA-designated flood zones near the Salt River and Tempe Town Lake, older home construction that may not meet current replacement cost coverage levels, and Arizona's rising construction costs that have pushed many dwelling limits below what rebuilding would actually cost. We compare carriers to find the right protection for your Tempe home.
Most Tempe renters - including ASU students and young professionals living near Mill Avenue and the university corridor - have no coverage for their personal belongings if they are stolen or damaged, no liability coverage if a guest is injured, and no housing cost coverage if their rental becomes uninhabitable. Renters insurance in Tempe starts at approximately $94 per year. We find the right policy for your specific situation.
Finding the right life insurance for your Tempe family does not need to be complicated. We walk you through term and whole life options in plain language, explain what each one costs and covers, and recommend a plan that fits your family's needs and budget - with no pressure and no jargon.
Your US auto policy is void the moment you cross into Mexico. For Tempe and Phoenix metro drivers heading south, driving without local coverage can result in detention after an accident regardless of fault. Through our Mexipass partnership, we provide fast, affordable A-Rated Mexico coverage before you reach the border.
Why Clients Choose Cook Insurance
We represent 14 carriers, not one. That gives residents real options at every price point - and it means we can shop the market again whenever your situation changes. No hidden bias toward any single company.
We have been serving Tempe clients from our Apache Junction office - a short drive east on the US-60 - for decades. We understand the specific coverage considerations that come with Tempe's urban density, Salt River flood exposure, student and renter population, and diverse commercial environment.
Every carrier in our network holds an A rating from AM Best. That rating is not a marketing label - it is a measure of financial strength. When our clients file a claim, the carrier has the reserves to pay it quickly and in full.
Steven Wade is in the Apache Trail office every day. When you call 480-986-4400, you are not routed to a national call centre. You talk to the person who owns the agency and has a personal stake in getting your coverage right.
Coverages
Personal, commercial, and specialty coverage – all under one roof, all from A-Rated carriers.
A captive agent works for one insurance company - State Farm, Allstate, Farmers, or whoever signs their paycheck. Their job is to sell you that company's products. They cannot shop around for you because they are not allowed to. An independent agent like Cook Insurance works with many carriers. That means more options for Tempe residents, honest pricing comparisons, and advice tied to your needs - not to any one company's sales targets.
Our Process
01
Tell us what you need to protect - your Tempe home, your vehicles, your business, your family, your budget. We ask the right questions upfront so we understand your full picture before we start shopping.
02
We compare options across multiple carriers to find the right coverage at the right price for your specific situation. Because we are independent, we can show you options a captive agent is simply not allowed to offer.
03
We walk you through your options in plain English - what each policy covers, what it excludes, what your deductibles mean in a real claim, and which option we recommend and why.
04
After you are covered, we are still here. Policy changes, claim questions, renewals, adding a vehicle - whatever comes up, you call the same number and talk to the same people.

Common Questions
These are the questions Tempe families and business owners ask us most. Don’t see yours? Call 480-986-4400 – a real agent answers.
Tempe residents face two coverage risks that are often overlooked: flood exposure for homeowners and renters in or near FEMA-designated Special Flood Hazard Areas along the Salt River corridor and Tempe Town Lake - standard homeowners and renters policies do not cover flood damage from any source, and the City of Tempe participates in the National Flood Insurance Program specifically because of this risk; and the renters insurance coverage gap that affects a significant portion of Tempe's population, particularly ASU students and young residents who are renting without any policy covering their personal property, liability, or temporary housing costs. We review both with every Tempe client before placing coverage.
Yes. Renters insurance is one of the most commonly overlooked and most affordable types of coverage for Tempe students and young residents. ASU students and renters near Mill Avenue often carry thousands of dollars in laptops, electronics, and personal belongings with no coverage if they are stolen, damaged in a monsoon event, or lost in a fire. Renters insurance in Tempe is available from as little as $94 per year per SafeButler 2026 data. We compare options across our carrier network to find affordable renters coverage. Call 480-986-4400 or request a quote online.
Our office is at 11512 E. Apache Trail in Apache Junction - approximately 30 minutes east of Tempe via the Superstition Freeway (US-60). We are open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Wednesday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. For Tempe clients who prefer to handle everything remotely, we process most quotes and policies entirely by phone and email. Call 480-986-4400 and a licensed agent will have your options ready the same day.
Yes, and no. FEMA has designated Special Flood Hazard Areas within Tempe's boundaries along the Salt River corridor and near Tempe Town Lake. The City of Tempe participates in the National Flood Insurance Programme specifically because of this documented risk. Standard homeowners and renters policies do not cover flood damage from any source - including monsoon runoff and Salt River flooding. A separate NFIP or private flood insurance policy is required for properties in flood zones. Federally backed mortgage lenders are required to mandate flood insurance in designated high-risk zones. Call us at 480-986-4400 and we will confirm whether your Tempe property falls in a flood zone.
Tempe businesses across the ASU corridor, Mill Avenue district, and Tempe Town Lake area typically need: general liability as the foundation - required by most commercial landlords before a lease is signed; workers compensation from the moment the first employee is hired, with no exceptions under Arizona law; commercial property covering buildings and equipment against monsoon flooding and haboob damage; and flood coverage for businesses in FEMA flood zones near the Salt River. Technology and professional services firms near ASU also need cyber liability and professional liability coverage. Call 480-986-4400 for a same-day business insurance quote.
Yes. Bundling home and auto insurance frequently produces real savings, and we compare bundle options across our carrier network to find the combination that saves Tempe residents the most. We also compare whether splitting carriers - taking the best home rate from one company and the best auto rate from another - actually beats the bundle discount for your specific Tempe situation. Call 480-986-4400 or request a quote online.
